Hi:

This is my first year really getting into Tri's and I was wondering if there are any groups that meet up for some open water swims in Winnebago? I'm doing the High Cliff HIM and it would be nice to get kicked in face, have my goggles ripped off etc. at least once before race day. I've done a few sprints a few years back but those were really small races with waves that were no more than 25 people.

Also, on average when is the lake warm enough to start swimming in with a full wetsuit. Thanks in advance for the help

Forum: Messages

Thanks for an epic ride

I just wanted to thank Mark, Teresa, Mike, Dr. Al, and Derek for a truly epic ride tonight (17 April 2012). "The road was angry that day my friends..." No, seriously, the wind was out of the south at 12-15 and the temperature was somewhere in the low/mid-50's when we started. Mark had not cancelled the ride in case anyone was crazy enough to risk it but couldn't go himself because (like me) he wasn't dressed for the weather. Despite that, the rest of us decided to go. Teresa and Mike lent us a wheel *all the way down to Sherwood* (for which I am truly grateful) and Dr. Al turned what could have been a short grind down Harwood into a full climb-The-Hill Tuesday night ride. Derek showed up out of nowhere at the Maintenance sheds after a late start and what must have been a soul-crushing chase.

That should have been epic enough but for me the truly amazing part was the ride back into town with the wind at our back. The grind to Highcliff took us an hour and averaged 11 mph; the spin back took 33 minutes and I can't tell you the average because I was going so fast my odometer literally fell off my bike. (Ok, those of you who know me and my bike know that isn't saying much but, what's the matter, haven't you ever heard of the "Suspension of Disbelief"?) I do remember a last few readings of 20+ mph on Harwood when I still had an odo. I think this must have been the longest time I sustained a speed over 20 mph--and it was awesome!

When we got back to World HQ Mike checked his car's thermometer and discovered it was 42 F. It was so cold even the Canadian admitted he was cold! I'm just glad that the wind was at our back on the way home--and that the HOTV YMCA has a hot tub.

See you next week,

Andy

p.s.: 11 miles in 33 minutes is an average of exactly 20 mph. Account for the dips in the road, the turns, and that we couldn't do 20 on the CE Trail and we really must have been cruising down Harwood.

Forum: Messages
